Namito City Of Gods Great Stuff Recordings A classic 2007 Namito techno joint from the vaults gets revisited in the latest Great Stuff release, with the man himself supplying a hot new version alongside two excellent remixes that make for a perfect package. His 2013 mix is laden with funk thanks to its disco-inflected bassline, with the original’s glockenspiel and new synth elements creating a brilliantly melodic synergy as the energetic techy percussion injects a sense of urgency into the proceedings. Sierra Sam takes a leaf out of the Jamie Jones’ rulebook, splicing a throbbing monotone bassline beneath ticking analog drum machine percussion and a nagging, filtering synth rhythm. Warm, fuzzy chords ease their way in, sustained, drawn-out notes that pan subtly and filter in and out of the mix. A held string note provides a element of tension in the second break as acid house claps join the fold, all working together to create a seriously deep, seductive rework. Brazil’s Wehbba, one of the fastest rising stars of the techno scene over the last few years, completes the package with his reworking. He delivers an absolute stormer, building slowly through layers of plump bass, shuffling percussion, tinges of acid and spooky delays. The break brings those metallic chimes and a haunting synth refrain to the fore, with fierce blasts of distorted bass and potent snare hits building up to a sizeable drop.

After serving up the jacking techy goodness of Every Sound with Mike Newman for the recent Great Stuff Winter Grooves compilation, London duo Hoxton Whores return to the housey sounds they’re more associated with for this melodic new EP on Great Stuff. The Morning After is a stripped back yet lively take on peak-time house music, a simple, plump b-line driving skippy beats, huge builds and drops and Prince-esque chord sounds in the break. The main hook is a mischievous, light-footed little riff, energetic and infectious, bubbling away amidst pitch-shifting, stereo-delayed FX trickery. Feel good music. Mirror takes a sleek, guttural bassline that’s one part French house and one part slinky electro-disco, and threads it through breezy, delicate arpeggios, softly vocodered vocals and stabs with a decided lightness of touch. It’s atmospheric but with a hefty dollop of funk, all driven by that killer bassline melody. Think somewhere between Roger Sanchez and Eric Prydz.

His EPs for Great Stuff keep going down a storm – so we couldn’t resist inviting him back for another bite of the cherry. Get Yaa occupies that sweet spot between heads-down, moody throbbing techno and the more funk-fuelled, house-influenced side of the genre. Driving from the off like a tech-fuelled steam train, it’s another masterful Lumen percolation, subtle percussive splashes lacing the heavily-swung, finger-snapping beat before a huge wave of muted bass storms its way into the track. A warped snippet of a classic hip-house vocal tops it off, completing a seriously hefty package. Warehouse is another absolute beast, kicking off with the tension and anticipation that’s more associated with breakdowns than functional intros for DJs. A squelchy, analog bassline fires in from nowhere, implanting a bold sense of funk on the proceedings, before delayed vocal cuts and sidechained atmospherics join in the party. An epic, dark breakdown reflects the track title, old skool snare rolls and Armand Van Helden siren FX upping the frenzied vibe before we hit hard into the drop.

Yeah Not Gonna is a resoundingly fresh, inventive and above all groovy track that sets him apart from his contemporaries, both hugely accessible and brimming over with smart production that packs a huge dancefloor punch. The track builds around a deliciously plump, undulating bassline and a quirky, cleverly effected vocal with a hedonistic attitude. It bounces like a beast, deft, sleek synth lines doing battle with each other and smart FX and vocal delays decorating the gaps in between. Somehow his glut of ideas never seems cluttered or messy – a testament to his intricate, painstaking production skills – instead ensuring that Yeah Not Gonna is captivating from start to finish. Watch this guy fly in 2013. A suitably beefy remix is supplied by a suitably heavyweight talent on the flip, Holland’s Rene Amesz. Prok & Fitch and Marco Lys Bango Great Stuff Recordings Brighton meets Treviso on this huge new release from Great Stuff – one of the most pumping tracks on the label in recent memory. These three geniuses have pooled their collective resources to create a finger-snapping groove that’s as slick as it is sassy, with thuddy kicks underpinning a bubbling, incessant bassline and funked-fuelled percussion. You can hear their attention to detail in the subtle machinations of the percussive rhythms that form the base of the track, the track weaving and jacking in a loose yet tautly controlled style. A familiar vocal chant and hazy stabs top off the package, with builds that balance excess and restraint in perfect quantities. DJ PP takes on the unenviable task of toying with this beast, and comes out sweating and gasping from his studio with a more stripped-back but no less potent rethink of the original. Crunchy beats adorn a suckerpunch of a bassline, with a tinge of yesteryear’s minimalism informing the groove. More feisty stuff, making for a rather dangerous package indeed.
