Ever the one to whip up a quirky little number, Swedish talent Zoo Brazil returns to Great Stuff with a typically bizarre cut. Ground centers around a warbling horn section refrain, whose playfulness is augmented by a heavily-swung, almost swingbeat style groove and incessant offbeat synth bouncing. It’s warped, wonky and a lot of fun – and sounds like little else around right now. Whomi’s remix strips things back to a more subtle level, with succinct beats underpinned by a throbbing bassline and a slow-burning approach to melodic development. Its warm melody and gradually unfolding refrains have a hint of the progressive about them, and it provides a distinctively different and more mellow vibe to the original. Completing the package, Fronter’s chunky remix provides a slab of turgid techno – using those horns in the breakdown to power some immense builds, but focusing on his own percolating percussive style for the most part. Thick, undulating bass drives this stadium-sized beast along with hefty intensity.

The legendary John Graham – aka Quivver – has been a major figure in house music since the early ’90s, helping forge the progressive sound that dominated dancefloors over the decade following his 1994 debut. Along the way he’s remixed the likes of Kylie Minogue, Culture Club and Tiesto, and created a slew of classic tracks. In more recent times, he made his debut on Great Stuff, released on Bedrock and remixed new school types like Jay Lumen and Wehbba. This new two-track EP for Great Stuff finds in him on top form, with the rolling groove of Cookin’ leading the way. It’s all chattering snares, soft monotone synth stabs and incessant, winding bass, with splashes of live percussion adding flavour. While it’s got plenty of dancefloor prowess, it’s still blessed with the same demure classiness that characterised his finest works over the years. You Wanna Know What on the flip takes things a little deeper still, with a classic tech house feel laden with snappy snares, tripped-out FX and engrossing atmospherics. It stomps with purpose and low-slung funk, with a tinge of that tribal rhythm that forms another strand of the classic Quivver sound.

Hoxton Whores Great Stuff Recordings London heroes Hoxton Whores have been doing their thing together for a decade now, but there are no signs of slouching on their hot new EP. Things Happen on the flip channels uplifting ’90s euro-house and welds it to seductive funk-fuelled contemporary 4/4 to excellent effect. A cute chime melody provides the main hook, with a dreamy female vocal recalling euphoric classics of yesteryear and a huge bassline doing the damage where it matters. Subtle strings and sidechained pads create a spacious atmosphere, with plenty of clever FX trickery along the way to keep things interesting. The sound of summer is very much here. Male vocalist Terri B joins them for Beat In My Head, a lively bit of house music that’s ripe to usher in the Ibiza season ahead. Terri’s deep voice serves up a soulful, hypnotic vocal refrain, which the Whores splice between analog bass funk and bright synth stabs. Mysterious, shimmering guitars add texture and drama, with head-nodding bongos completing the compelling blend of sounds.
